Family Engagement Policy
At Hume‐Fogg Academic High School, we recognize that parents play a critical role in their child’s success as well as the success of the school. We recognize the importance of working closely with parents to provide a quality educational experience for all students. In fact, it is one of our greatest assets – a supportive, caring parent community.
Communication with Parents/Guardians
- We will work with families to annually review and adjust the Family Engagement Policy as needed to outline the commitments of the school and families to ensure academic success for each student. We will provide families with a copy of this policy via open house, main office, school website, PTO website, student handbook and email.
- We will provide a description of the course offerings and curriculum being used, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels that students are expected to meet.
- We will strive to communicate clearly and effectively with parents through a variety of communication strategies including, but not limited to daily announcements, call out announcements, school website updates, progress reports, report cards, by mail, by phone, and emails.
- Parents will have access to Infinite Campus, allowing them to view students’ grades, attendance, and assignments. Parents will also be able to access and message through Schoology. We will work to ensure parents are aware of and included in the EVRITS communication database, so information is accessible and received.
Meetings with Parents
- We will offer Parent‐Teacher conferences throughout the year so that parents can meet with students’ teachers and work together to help students achieve academic success. We will use in‐person and online platforms to ensure flexibility when planning how and when we meet so as to best support family and school schedule. We will provide translation services through MNPS for families needing language support.
- We will provide opportunities for parents to formulate suggestions and participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their student. Parent input is always welcome and will never be misused for retribution against the student or parent(s). We are partners, school and family, for the benefit of the student.
- School staff will maintain an “open door” policy for parents, phone calls, emails, and conferences.
Parent Participation
- Parents will be included on the School Improvement Plan (SIP) Committee, providing input and perspective. Parents are an integral part of the school community and crucial to improving our school.
- The school/district will provide platforms to aid parents in monitoring their child’s progress and assist them in usage.
- The school will assist parents in understanding Tennessee’s/College Board’s academic content standards, student achievement standards, and various academic assessments.
- The school will support and assist parents in successfully transitioning their child through high school to college and other postsecondary opportunities.
- Parents will have opportunities to actively engage in a viable and relevant SSO/PTO and serve as partners with staff for the betterment of the school community.
- Parents/Guardians automatically gain full membership into the Hume‐Fogg Association. The HF Association (PTO) works in tandem with the school partnering to provide support and resources as well as opportunities for connection to families. Communication of information will be sent to families each week from the group.
- Parents will meaningfully engage with business and community partners to bring in resources for the school and students.
- Parents are encouraged to engage with our Lunch and Learn programming both by observing and by planning/and or presenting.
- Parent volunteers are both needed and welcomed to help with various groups, programs, and extracurriculars.
